His take on the year: It's certainly been interesting, and this year's intake seem a bit more savvy about student life. Some, of course, did better than others: Kami Lung, for instance, is a model student, while that Darren Alderton needs to learn a bit of discipline.
How have things changed for students recently? The main problem is the drain on their finances. There were huge grants in my day and no tuition fees. Nowadays, most students leave university with huge debts, which can be immensely disillusioning. But if they're careful during university, they can ease the burden.
Top three financial tips:
- First, keep a record of everything you spend. Carry a little notebook in your bag and jot down any purchases. It doesn't take long and you'll be able to see exactly where your money's going, and what you can cut down on.
- Second, maintain good relationships with the people who influence your finances. Your bank manager is top of the list, followed by any employers and possibly your folks.
- And finally, good luck! You're going to need it.

Course fees are also payable and a loan to cover this cost is available. Course fees don’t have to be paid back until a student is earning over £15,000!
